The movie begins with a prologue, showing a penguin who is starring in a television series called Penguins of Madagascar, dealing with the mistakes of his past by being fired from the series after being hired to be the voice of a meerkat named Melman. As the Penguin is trying to come to terms with his new life, he is contacted by his former co-workers of the Spies for International Research (S.I.R.), who are also penguins. Skipper, Kowalski, Rico and Private return to the island of Madagascar to rescue him. While on their way, they are pursued by the octopus Dave, who has kidnapped the penguins, and evade him by escaping to a Transylvania-style castle. Skipper meets Dave, who takes over the penguins and brings them to S.I.R., where they are forced to watch a movie. Dave takes over their minds, so they watch Madagascar 3, which annoys them. The penguins are taken to the S.I.R. headquarters. There they are forced to watch the same movie again, and they eventually escape. They meet up with Melman, who explains to them that they are in a spy agency called the North Wind. He then explains that Dave is after them, but the penguins have to get off the island first.
The movie was originally set to be released on December 22, 2014, but was delayed to December 20, 2014, after the release of Disney's Frozen was pushed back one week to December 22, 2014.[13]
The movie's production design was inspired by the BBC's television series Spooks, as well as the penguin dancing found in Michael Jackson's Thriller video. It is the first spin-off film in the franchise, as the movie does not feature any of the main characters of the other three films. The movie was released in 3D.[12]
